Romeo and Juliet Comparison of Act 2 Scene 4 and Act 3 Scene 1 Paper Romeo and Juliet is a play of contrasts. It is split into two parts; the first half which includes 2.4, this half is positive full of love and word play, and the second half where the tragedies happen, 3.1 is a pivotal scene in this half. In Act 2 Scene 4 Romeo and Mercutio use puns and jokes to laugh at eachother at the beginning whereas in Act 3 Scene 1 Benvolio makes an ominous comment about anticipating a fight. The locations in which these scenes take place are significant, Act 3 Scene 1 more so. The key themes of the two scenes lead on well from their beginnings. The humour of 2.4 lasts for the whole scene, except when Romeo organises the wedding, contributing to the positive feel of the first two acts. In contrast to this 3.1 has unexpected twists like the death of Mercutio. Violence is a key theme also shown in the death of Tybalt. The avenging of Mercutios death is a matter of respect, another key theme. If Mercutio didnt have so much respect for Romeo he wouldnt have fought Tybalt and led to the tragedy. This shows that Mercutio cant resist joking even though it contributes to his death. Shakespeare designed the character this way, even his name comes from the word mercurial meaning lively and quick-witted. When Mercutio is dying he continues to joke about being a grave man whereas in 2.4 Romeo stops joking when the top of Juliet is breached by her Nurse. The effect is that Romeo takes his marriage more seriously than Mercutio takes his own life. Romeo changes his attitude over both scenes. In 2.4 the change is small, he starts joking with Mercutio Why then is my pump well flowered? and then matures while speaking to the Nurse shrived and married. In 3.1 the change in him is very dramatic, he arrives after his wedding and is feeling like celebrating but instead Tybalt tries to force him into a fight which he refuses. He claims to Love thee (Tybalt) better than though canst devise. However he has no way of explaining that they are now cousins so Mercutio sees his actions as cowardice. Romeos kindness changes to hate when Mercutio is stabbed: Fire-eyed fury be my conduct now. He also blames Juliet for making weak, O sweet Juliet/ Thy beauty hath made me effeminate Avenging Mercutio is typical of Romeos behaviour. He cares about honour and outward appearance. His poetic language towards Juliet my heart dear love shows that he believes in love and romance. Shakespeare emphasises this by making name and romance so similar, as if they almost synominous with eachother. In 2.2 Juliet famously says, wherefore art thou Romeo, she wishes he has a name that isnt Montegue but instead of saying Montegue she says Romeo. If he wasnt a romantic then they wouldnt fall in love and wouldnt die. However she then says A rose by any other name would smell as sweet names are a strong theme in the play, many of the characters names reflect their personalities, this is the only time Shakespeare suggests names arent important. The violence and the curse in 3.1 would be shocking to an Elizabethan audience, who would strongly believe in black magic, unlike 2.4 which is the meeting of the two comic characters; Mercutio and the Nurse. Shakespeare would have included these scenes because of their importance to the story-line and character development, especially 3.1. Friar Laurence is in the scenes before both 2.4 and 3.1. In 2.3 Romeo goes to him to say he has been Feasting with mine enemy, hes been with Juliet even though she is the enemy of his family. He asks to be married, Friar Laurence agrees though he worried its too soon after his infatuation with Rosaline, however, he believes their union might bring their families together so says yes. Despite this decision he is still wary, he shows his concern again the scene before 3.1 when he tells Romeo to Love moderately, because Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow. He means their sudden passionate love could burn out just as quickly and they will have to stay together without love. After both scenes Juliet confides in the Nurse. After she returns from speaking with Romeo the Nurse mocks Juliet by saying: I am a-weary, give me leave a while and Do you not see I am out of breath. She appears a little sad that Juliet is getting married, she doesnt want to lose her, but hides it under her jokes. In comparison her attitude in 3.2 is anger because Juliet is now married to a murder, he should have thought of her. Shes melodramatic about Tybalts death, O Tybalt, Tybalt, the best friend I had! They werent close but she wants some attention on her. There is a strong contrast between Juliet and her Nurse. Nurse jokes about sex, though wilt fall backward when thou hast more wit, her humour is vulgar and simpler than Mercutios intricate puns. She repeats herself, this makes her come across as unintelligent. Juliet, however, is smart and stays in control of her relationship with Romeo. She declares her love first and is the first to suggest Thy purpose marriage. Shes not a traditional woman of the time who would have been subservient to his wishes. She might have been so forward to earn herself a stronger position in their relationship but its more likely that she recognising how important it was to marry quickly so their families couldnt separate them and make her marry Paris. The structure and writing techniques Shakespeare uses in Romeo and Juliet are very complicated. He writes in iniambic pentameter. He uses both verse and prose depending on the importance of the passage. Romeo and Juliet share lines of sonnets when they declare their love for eachother and Mercutio does his Queen Madge speech in verse. However in less important scenes they speak in Prose In conclusion, the two scenes show that Romeo and Juliet really is a play of contrasts, however, they also show the links between the differences. Comments said in 2.4 predict actions and events in 3.1 despite the very different atmospheres, which proves the effectiveness of Shakespeares play of contrasts.

How NOT to Take SAT Practice Tests Many test takers and self-studiers (mistakenly) believe in the Marathon Fallacy for SAT practice. The usual advice to those training for a marathon is to run more, run longer, and run to your limit. This works for marathons because running requires primarily one adaptation of your body. As you run more- no matter how you run, when you run, or where you run- your circulation should start to improve and your muscles should slowly strengthen. This, in turn, makes you a better runner. Students who believe in the Marathon Fallacy for SAT practice believe in the myth that all they need to do is pick up a practice test and churn away. More specifically, they tend to think the following: SAT skills are a generic muscle that gets stronger as long as you put time into practice, no matter what that practice looks like. The version or year of an SAT practice test doesn't matter. You can do a few practice problems on your phone or iPad while chatting with friends. You don't need to think deeply about the practice SATs after you take them. After churning through a bunch of practice SATs, students who believe in this myth take the SAT again and are shocked that their scores are the same or barely 10 points higher.Who would have guessed, but the brain is not a single muscle that responds to blind practice. Instead of comparing SAT practice to a marathon, it's better to think of the test as being similar to baseball. When you practice baseball, technique matters. Swinging a bat a thousand times will make you swing stronger and harder, but it won’t guarantee you’ll be a good player. That’s because so many other techniques matter more, such as your stance, the angle of your swing, your follow through, and your strategy after you hit the ball. In short, you have to practice baseball to get good at it, but you need to practice carefully. It’s the same with SAT prep: you need to prep for the SAT by taking realistic practice tests, but you need to also make sure you're preppingthe right way. The Best Way to Prep for the SAT: 4 Expert Tips Now, let me show you how to best prep for the SAT so that you, too, can get a perfect score! #1: Use Official SAT Practice Tests I see students get this method wrong the most. Students will pick up a generic set of practice SATs, not check the version or quality of them, and just use them from start to finish. The problem with almost all SAT practice tests that are not official (I call them cheap knockoff SATs) is that only a minimum amount of work has been put into them to make them look like the SAT. With cheap knockoff SATs, publishers tend to throw all kinds of trash into multiple-choice format and then call it "SAT practice." Some of the biggest sins I've seen include the following: One popular test-prep company wholesale recycled their GRE questions and called it SAT Practice.I’m not even kidding- I opened up their GRE questions on one screen and their SAT ones on another screen and saw the same questions, word for word! My jaw dropped. One book of SAT practice tests by one of the top test-prep companies had some questions with multiple right answers or no right answers at all. Have you ever taken a cheap knockoff SAT practice test, looked at an answer, and said, "That can't be right"? Well, now you know why! The worst SAT questions are those free problems that float around on websites that clearly have no specialization on the SAT.Usually, these sites have a ton of ads and prey on beginners. But even SAT books from the biggest test-prep publishers- books that look perfectly legit and are even on shelves in stores such as Barnes Noble- suffer from this issue, too. Publishers of cheap knockoff SATs are often under tight deadlines and take advantage of students. They know most students are novices and might be gullible enough to believe that anything in a multiple-choice format is similar to an actual SAT question. This wouldn't be horrible if all there was to the SAT was its multiple-choice format. But the test is much more complicated than this and asks certain questions in certain ways. These ways are very specific and take a lot of work by high-scoring experts to figure out. If you're training with bad SAT practice questions, it's like training with a softball for a baseball game. You'll spend all your time optimizing your skills for the wrong thing. I believe in this concept so much that in my program, PrepScholar, we use onlySAT practice tests released by the College Board for our full-length tests. Even when we design drill-problems, we have three sets of experts carefully review each question to ensure they adhere to every detail and the overall format of the SAT. #2: Take Each Practice Test in a Realistic Setting Many students are tempted to take shortcuts when doing SAT practice tests. Got five minutes before Mom picks you up from sports? Then why not do two SAT math questions on your iPhone? The problem here is that you're training in an environment that differs significantly from that of the real SAT. Let's take the five-minute-on-your-iPhone example above to demonstrate exactly why a realistic setting matters: Giving yourself five minutes for two math questions is way too much time. You’ll be training for the wrong timing and will fall into bad habits, such as grinding out a solution in a way that you could never, ever hope to do on the real SAT. You won’t have scrap paper or a pencil to write down notes and ideas. To do well on the SAT, you must take advantage of the space in the test to jot down ideas, your work, and any notes. Doing SAT practice on an iPhone trains none of these critical skills. You're not taking the SAT inthe normal four-hour context.Regardless of whether you're physicallyfatigued after hours of playing sports or are feeling totally mentally refreshed, the environment simply isn't realistic. Studying hard or hardly studying? Practicing the SAT in bed is a bad idea. Now, five minutes of practice on an iPhone might be an uncommon example, but it's very easy to slack off, even when you're taking a practice SAT at your desk. Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine how realistic your SAT practice session is: Did you take the entire test in one sitting (good) or split it up into several chunks (bad)? The more chunks you split a practice SAT into, the worse your practice will be since you won’t learn how to prepare for the fatigue of the test. Did you give yourself an extra long break or take breaks between sections where none are scheduled? On the actual SAT, you don't get to eat a two-hour-long dinner in the middle of the test, so don't do it during a practice test, either! Do you sometimes peek at answers? Peeking at answers is a cardinal sin. Looking at the answer sheet even once during a practice SAT can easily boost your score 100 points. This not only screws up the entire vibe and sequence of the test but can also make you think you're doing better than you actually are. Do you give yourself a couple of extra minutes on a section, maybe to bubble in a few answers? Giving yourself extra time is much worse than it seems at first glance. Knowing how to time yourself so you can finish each section in time, while challenging, is a critical skill you'll need to build up. Part of time management training involves knowing to stop taking the test a few minutes before time is up and also knowing how to deal with last-minute troubles. The best way to prep for the SAT is to take each SAT practice test under as realistic a setting as possible.So what should you do? Get out a table in a quiet room. Have the tests printed in front of you with bubble sheets. Use a real timer to give yourself scheduled breaks, andnever give yourself even a minute more. Once you're all set, take the entire test as if you were at an SAT test center. I believe in using a realistic test setting so much that our SAT prep program encourages this to the fullest extent possible. We have timers exactly like those on the real test, and automatically watch out for any noncompliance that can jeopardize the studying process. #3: Put In Enough Time This might seem obvious, but it's definitely worth repeating the process described in the first two tips. You need to put in time to improve on the SAT. While I'm against chugging practice test after practice test, at the end of the day the chugger will still do better than the test taker who puts in nearly zero time. Improving on the SAT takes hard work. Unwillingness to accept this is the quickest route to stagnation. In fact, in this guide, I am assuming that you will be putting in at least 10 hours of SAT study time in total. If you're studying fewer than 10 hours, nothing can help you significantly improve your SAT score. Not a book, not some cheap tricks, not me- not even a five-figure "college consultant." If you're studying fewer than 10 hours, throw this entire guide away.In this case, the best way to improve your score is to simply put in more study time. Is she just being disagreeable? I can’t say whether the colleague is being disagreeable or not, but I can say why she objects to the sentence. The conjunctions if and whether are often used interchangeably. Sometimes such usage can pass, but sometimes whether is the only choice. One rule often cited is that if does not follow a preposition. Corrected, the sentence is â€Å"Promotion depends on whether the employee maintains a good attendance record.† Seeking to avoid confusion, Sir Ernest Gowers added this entry to the 1963 edition of Fowler’s Modern English Usage: To avoid possible ambiguity it may be prudent to confine if to its proper duty of introducing the protasis of a conditional sentence, and not to use it as a substitute for though or whether or (with not) to introduce a possible alternative. Note: In the context of grammar, protasis is â€Å"the first or introductory clause in a sentence, especially the clause which expresses the condition in a conditional sentence.† The Chicago Manual of Style spells out two instances in which if should not be used in lieu of whether: 1. to introduce a noun clause in an indirect question the answer to which is either yes or no. Doubt that conveys a negative sense of skepticism or questioning: â€Å"I doubt that you’ll ever get your money back.† Doubt whether also conveys a sense of skepticism â€Å"The official says that he doubts whether the company could survive.† Doubt if is a casual phrasing for doubt that. question whether; question of whether; question as to whether. The first phrasing is the best, the second is next best, and the third is to be avoided. Paul Brians (Common Errors in English Usage) acknowledges that if â€Å"can’t really be called an error,† but adds, â€Å"when you are discussing two alternative possibilities, whether sounds more polished.† A note by David Foster Wallace in the Oxford American Writer’s Thesaurus offers â€Å"a simple test†: If you can coherently insert an â€Å"or not† after either the conjunction or the clause it introduces, you need whether. He gives these examples: He didn’t know whether [or not] it would rain. YES She asked me straight out whether I was a fetishist [or not]. YES We told him to call if [or not] he needed a ride. Features and Functions of Information Systems In this assignment I am going to describe the features and functions of an information system and demonstrate my knowledge in information systems and ability to use the skills necessary to produce management information (information to aid in decision making) I am required to know the features and functions of information systems and to be able to use IT tools to produce management information. In this assignment I am to use my own client. I am required to write a report for my client that uses some theoretical knowledge and spreadsheets from my client. In the assignment I must describe the features and functions of information system and explain the one I am using in my spreadsheet and why am I using it. I am to produce information from my clients system access and manipulate the data to present it in suitable formats to support organisational decision making. Describe the features and functions of information systems (P4) Features and functions of information systems (IS) There are various features of an information system and each of them has a specific function. Data is the most essential element in an information system. Raw details and figures of the company is known as data which is processed to make information. All the data have to be stored in the information system and processed in an accurate way. Data without being processed is of no purpose and use. Once it is processed it is called information which can then be used for required purposes in the system for gaining commercial advantage. The data which is obtained has to be reliable as the whole system will get corrupted if it comes from an unknown and devious source. The data has to be up to date and timely as there are updates and modernisation which happens frequently. For instance, Data can be about various things such as figures of the age groups, addresses and gender of clients. In an IS to obtain and capture data, it has to be collected from people. People can manipulate as well as help in making information for the system. For instance if data has to be collected about the number of cars people bought in a month it has to be collected from people. They are the main interpretation of information and chose what data to be entered into the system. For instance a person from the banking department can choose what all information to display in there IS. The same way there are different organisation which presents information depending on how it will benefit their company. A person can even be part of the information system if they are trained well to use the system accurately. People even play as the client and all data is collected from them for the flow of information. This data captured is then used for processing information which would help the organisation to know about the sales and finance of the company and analyse to improvise its systems. In an information system hardware is the computers used to store and collect information. Hardware is another essential feature of an information system for its functioning. The hardware should have large storage space to store the vast amount of data input into the system.   For small companies PCS can be enough but for larger companies they have to collect information from other sources so need to have internet access. So servers are connected to the system so that it provides internet for sharing information online via email. For safety purposes so that only the employees of the organisation can have access to the information servers such as intranet can also be used. So the hardware which would be used should be compatible to connect to the internet and transformation of data into information. The hardware used should even be easily accessible and up to date for functioning without any disruption to the IS. To build an information system a software have to be used. Along with the hardware the software is also essential as the main processing of data into information takes place in the software. Depending on the quires of the users the information has to be processed. The software used should have common features for building the system with causing minimum errors in the system. The software has to be compatible of processing vast amount of data. For instance any Microsoft program can be used to build a software, preferably Microsoft excel is used for financial stats and figures. In information system telecommunications play a vital role for the transfer of data and information using internet/intranet. It acts as the distribution of data from people to different organisations for the required queries. Mostly organisations prefer using intranet for more safety so that only the employees of the company can have access of the information being processed. As the information is on the internet it has to be shared on a reliable source. Apart from all the features of an information system it even has large amounts of functions. One function of the information system is the input. It is divided into two sub-parts. The function of the first part is that the input of detailed data is stored, processed and creates the base from the information system. The second sub- part of the input is that the user must also tell what kind of analyses they want from the IS. The input allows users to specify what they want from the output and analyse what must be done to make any changes. Sometimes this second sub function is hidden from the users and not always available. The second function is known as Storage handles all the data that is inputted into the information system. Everything stored is always in the highest detailed level so that it is accurate and easily accessible. There should be regular backups done so that in case of any error/virus, all the data stored is not lost. They should always be stored in different locations to avoid getting damaged by natural calamities. This storage has an impact on the original data storage as well as the backup data storage. The third function is processing which converts data into information. A simple process would be adding up all the products sold by a company by a variable such as the location, time and date of the store. Select information to support a business decision-making process (P6) In this part of the assignment I created quotes for a car insurance company called P.B Services Ltd. I created them by entering random peoples names, addresses, gender, cars bought, and ages, what kind of insurance they bought, if there is another driver who would use the vehicle and if they would receive any no claims discount or not. After I entered data I filed a quote for each person. Then the software which I used created quotes for their overall car insurance.   I did the same for around fifteen people. The prices differed for each person because the data entered was different. This information which I selected and created can be used for gaining commercial advantage as well as decision making. If this information collected is analysed the company would know how much insurance is paid by each person and how they could improve their service by adding any extra service and increasing the cost. This information would even be helpful to know the statistics and figures of the company.

An Analysis of Plenty by Isabelle Dixon

Dixon's poem Plenty shows the relationship between a mother and her five daughters which, on a wider horizon could be taken as a relationship between adults and children. The poet starts by telling us that they used to run ‘riot' and this was more than the mother could cope with. We are not told whether the behaviour was meant to annoy the mother or it was just a normal prank played and enjoyed by children. The situation in stanza is not a pleasant one as the poet gives us a grim picture of the situation they had to cope with.Water was a rare commodity and because of that they could not afford the luxury of filling the ‘old enamel a tub' which we are told was ‘age-stained' and rusty. The reason for that is given in stanza two where the poet explains that there was persistent drought and dams were dry and ‘windmills stalled. ‘ The most interesting thing about the description here is that she compares her mother's smile to the stalled windmill and the dry dam. One gets the impression that even though the mother was smiling it lacked the warmth of a genuine smile.We are also made to understand that such a smile almost always came when she had done something wrong. She continues to tell us that her mother smiling at their faults was a ploy to keep them from being chaotic or mischievous. What we learn from this is that the mother did not do anything to scold the children perhaps because she knew shouting and ranting was not going to work. We are told that this situation was on-going. Added to all this was the fact the mother had to worry about how to provide the bare necessities of life for her children and ensure that there was food on the table.  Read also Critical appreciation of the poem â€Å"Old Ladies’ Home†.It was not a cheerful situation because ‘each month was weeks too long. ‘ This gives me the impression that the mother had to the hard work of ensuring whatever little money she had could be suffic ient for the month but this was not the case. ‘Her mouth laid clamped hard on this' shows us that the mother did not talk this aspect of her worries. She did not want the children to worry because she was worrying about how she was going to feed them. The first four stanzas paint a grim picture and describe a period of want when everything, including water, was in short supply.However, even though the situation was grim the mother made sure she bore everything in silence and concentrated on how to make her children happy. By not scolding them unnecessarily and by being gentle with in times of misbehaviour she was able to cope. Stanza five begins with a litany of the pranks the poet and her sisters used to play. They ‘skipped chores' and when the mother was not near they indulged in the ‘lovely sin' of filling the bath beyond the recommended limit given by their mother. However, stanza five is also a discovery for the poet.She tells us that as children they did not understand why their mother had to impose those water restrictions or why she had to bother about every little prank they played. ‘We thought her mean' is enough to tell us that she has realized this. Stanza seven echoes the title of the poem as we are told how water is no longer in short supply. The poet can afford to stay in the bath for as long as she wishes and can fill the tub to the brim if she so wishes. The ‘now' at the beginning of the stanza tells us that the poet's situation has changed.Unlike the past she is no a ‘sybarite' and devotes herself to luxury. It is as if she is saying making up for all the luxury she lost in childhood. The metaphor ‘The shower's a hot cascade' describes vividly the poet's feeling. She is comparing the shower to water fountain and not only that it is hot. She can even afford to leave the heating on. The last stanza begins with a feeling of nostalgia. The poet misses her sisters who, we can confidently say, are no longer staying with their mother. They have all moved on and perhaps enjoying the luxury of a filled bath tub.She even misses her mother's smile. Unlike in the past the mother's smile is full of mirth because the ‘lean dry times' are over. We get the impression that their mother's suffering was due to their long childhood and now that they are able to fend for themselves most of the problems have gone. The mother is now happy and does not have to worry about a month which was ‘weeks too long. ‘ A casual reading of the poem will make the reader think it is a reminiscence of someone's childhood experiences. But underneath this surface lies the themes and messages the poet puts across.We learn that patience can help us deal with a lot of life's everyday problems. Instead of adults taking their frustrations onto their children they should learn to cope with these frustrations. We also learn from the mother's reactions to the children's behaviour that children must be allowed to be children and occasionally brought onto the straight path when necessary. The mother did not do anything that would have driven the children away from home. She did not blame the children for the fact that she could not afford a luxurious for herself and the children.What she did is what every parent should learn: she accepted her responsibility as a parent and understood that the children did not negotiate with her to come into the world. Her responsibility was to provide the physical, biological and emotional needs of her children. It is also good that poet later realised the mother was not being mean after all. This is also a very important message for the youth of today. They should understand that every parent wants the best for their children and even though they may see some of the decisions taken by adults as harsh in the long run it is for their own benefit.

They market 18 brands and are divided into four categories - consumer products, professional products, luxury products, active cosmetics. They operate in many varied distribution circuits in over 130 countries (L’Orà ©al, n.d). (49 words) The External Marketing Environment in which L’Orà ©al Operates In. Political A political challenge for L Orà ©al is the requirement to conform to different government leadership styles in the various countries they operate within. They faced a decline in dermatology from its Galderma brand due to new legislations governing drugs (Euromonitor, 2005). The EU law affects L’Orà ©al, as they are restricted with their use of certain chemicals such as Phthalates, which are carcinogenic (The Rules Governing Cosmetic Products in the European Union). L’Orà ©al is obligated to produce safe products that don’t contain any harmful substances (Sadik, 2013). Also, legislation for advertising has an effect.
